This week, Phil and Gerry Brisson [@gleanerscommunityfoodbank] discuss the recent appropriation of $4.5M to the food bank network.

The Food Bank Council of Michigan is the only organization with reach into all 83 counties. We work through nearly 3,000 pantries, and every pound of food in our warehouses was already destined for someone before this crisis began. But we’re shifting, rerouting, and scaling as fast as humanly possible. Our network proved during the pandemic that we can scale statewide — and we’re doing it again. Still, we must be clear: you cannot scale charity to replace a federal food program. We are designed to supplement, not substitute. SNAP is a federally funded entitlement program; food banking is a charitable one -- the scale is different.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about people — and about the difference we can make right now.
