No one welcomes a crisis. And after the last decade, most Americans are exhausted by the constant churn of disruption. But crises have a way of exposing what’s real. They strip away pretense and force us to confront what’s right in front of us.
This crisis—this one—was not a surprise. The warnings were clear. Policymakers understood the consequences. They knew who would be harmed. And still, the shutdown happened.
Here’s the thing about any crisis: it reduces all of us to our most basic needs—food, water, medicine, safety, and the simple desire to return to normal. That’s the common denominator every time.
And in those moments, the food banks of Michigan—and food banks across this nation—are always among the first to arrive and the last to leave. We don’t wait for a declaration. We don’t wait for the headline. We were already there before the crisis began, and we’ll be there long after it ends
