Michigan Agricultural Surplus System

MASS Moves Michigan: From Surplus to Strength

The Michigan Agricultural Surplus System (MASS) invests in Michigan farmers, strengthens the local economy, and increases access to fresh, healthy food while reducing waste.

MASS is a first-of-its-kind model. Established in 1990 and replicated in over 40 states, MASS creates a reliable market for Michigan’s surplus and No. 2-grade food, supporting farmers and processors while reducing waste.

This consistent investment strengthens the local food system and enables the Food Bank Council of Michigan member network to operate at scale, supporting its role in statewide emergency food distribution across all 83 counties.

As a coordinated effort across growers, processors, distributors, and the Food Bank Council of Michigan member network, MASS demonstrates what is possible when sustained investment and strong partnerships align toward a shared goal.
