Hunger is NOT bigger than we are

Hunger is not bigger than we are, it is not better than we are, and it is not beyond us to solve.

This weekend on Food First Michigan we welcome Dominick Pallone, the executive director of the Michigan Association of Health Plans. Join Dr. Phil Knight, Gerry Brisson, president and CEO of Gleaners Community Food Bank, and Dominick to discuss the intersection of food insecurity and healthcare from the payer’s perspective.

The Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP) represents their member health plans who together provide coverage for more than 3 million Michiganders. Addressing the social determinants of health, including food insecurity, is a key part of promoting overall population health. There is a significant role that food can play in healthcare, both as a preventive measure and as treatment.

The social determinants of health, including food insecurity, will be addressed in the 36th annual MAHP Summer Conference. Michigan solutions to food insecurity will be highlighted in a session presented by Dr. Phil Knight, Dr. Dawn Opel, and Lewis Roubal with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Hunger as a daily challenge or food insecurity as a lifestyle are comingled with the challenges associated with poverty. They are difficult problems, but they CAN be solved when we do MORE and BETTER together.
