National Food is Medicine Day Special: Featuring our MiFAM Keynote, Dr. Seth Berkowitz
Food as Medicine vs. Food is Medicine
While often used interchangeably, the phrases have a subtle difference in emphasis. “Food is medicine” is a broader concept that recognizes food’s power to promote health and healing. “Food as medicine” focuses on food as a therapeutic, clinical intervention that is integrated into a person’s care plan to help treat specific conditions.
Tune in Sunday at 9 p.m. on WJR Radio with Phil, Gerry Brisson [GCFB], Dr. Dawn Opel [FBCM], and Dr. Seth Berkowitz, MD, MPH, of UNC to preview the Summit and discuss the interrelationship between income, food insecurity, nutrition, and health, and how specific Food as Medicine interventions can support improved health outcomes.
Dr. Seth A. Berkowitz, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is a nationally recognized expert on the connection between health-related social needs and health outcomes. He serves as lead evaluator for the North Carolina Healthy Opportunities Pilots and is Deputy Scientific Director for the American Heart Association’s Health Care by Food initiative.
